Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is the written language of Arabic. In its classical form it is the language of the Holy Qur’an. In its everyday use it is the language of newspapers and the media. MSA is a living language used by educated people and intellectuals. The objective of our MSA course is to enable you to read and write at an acceptable academic level so that you can follow current affairs in the Middle East or begin to read classical Arabic literature. Many western scholars distinguish two common fuṣḥā varieties: the Classical Arabic of the Qur'an and early Islamic (7th to 9th centuries) literature, and Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), the standard language in use today. The modern Standard language is closely based on the Classical language, and most Arabs consider the two varieties to be two registers of one and the same language.
